The intent of this post is just to begin a discussion about what science is, and evolve to a bigger and more general discussion. So enjoy yourself and let me know what you wanna say or ask :).
“What is science?”
This is an enduring question that some people tried to answer along the time. One of the way that this question was answered is: “Science is a philosophical system including only objects with the property that it makes sense to question its existence”. If you agree that what we can experiment on the nature is true, one particular property of this set arises: “The nature can be used to test whether an element of this set is true or not”. That intuitive property is used since the Greeks (and even before). And it induces directly a method: “The Scientific Method”. So science can be produced systematically using that Scientific Method which consists of trying some hypothesis against the nature and storing the correspondent results on any record.
It is one of the greatest treasure of the human kind, but it has its weakness. One of them is that the science is bounded by our limited perception of the nature. However, we can amplify our perceptions with the aid of engineering and the science itself (high-frequency receivers, microscope, etc…). Of course, there is no guarantee about our limits on that direction, and even if we have done great steps or insignificant ones on amplifying our perceptions. No parameters until now to effectively compare.
So, I think we should send our science to the vastness of the universe. It is one thing that we can offer to others civilizations, it they exist.
Good week for us!
